The Owner of River Mountain Action Rafting, Roger Mogford, went as a paying guest on a rafting trip with another outfitter back in the late 1970s. He loved the sport, and felt he could do a better job in terms of customer service and convenience than he had experienced with the company with whom he had gone. He kept in contact with the guide, John Joseph, who had taken him down the river, and eventually hired him as a manager to assist him in setting up the business as a quality operation. John did well and was instrumental in the initial stages of our growth, but he wished to move on and run a variety of rivers, so by the end of the season, Maria Dean, who had been John's campground assistant took over as Camp Manager, and has been with us ever since
The first year or so proved the viability of offering quality trips, with luxury camping facilities being provided rather than the wilderness type experience that was pretty much the norm for all rafting operations in those days. Thus was born the "Comfort Camping" for which we are renowned, and very proud of. Being based out of Southern California, and operating trips out of Northern California did present some logistical challenges, but because of the size of the Los Angeles and Orange County marketing areas, the effort was worth it.
Initially, our groups were not large enough to justify chartering intercity coaches, so RMA purchased their own intercity coach, known throughout the Rafting Industry as the "BumbleBee" due to it's black and yellow paint job. As the years passed, we bought out two other companies, and built the operation into one of the larger outfitters on the South Fork of the American River. By 1988 our groups had grown in size on a consistent basis justify chartering later model and larger coaches, so the "BumbleBee" was sold and became a Las Vegas bus.
Over the years we have moved our campground on two occasions to upgrade and facilitate our growth, and can now accommodate up to our permit limit of 148 guests; Our growth has been possible as a result of the loyalty of so many of our repeat guests and Group Organizers and the spin off groups that develop over time, they too deserve recognition since without them there would be no history to report.
